About Us

TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE OF FRENCH

A non-profit organization, Canadian Youth for French (CYF) was founded after identifying several key areas for improvement for French-speakers across Canada.

  • 48.7% of French Immersion graduates lose their French throughout their post-secondary studies.

  • Opportunities to learn and maintain French in universities and colleges are difficult to find.

  • The benefits of speaking French as an additional language often aren’t fully understood.

  • While there are French clubs in several post-secondary institutions, no national network exists to bring these students together.

Canadian Youth for French aims to increase the number of French speakers in Canada by empowering post-secondary youth to learn and practice French.

  • We aim to create opportunities that build bridges between Francophones and non-Francophones in Canada.

  • We are actively promoting the many benefits of speaking French to post-secondary students.

  • We’re in the process of establishing a national network of those who value French to create a sense of support and community across the country.

  • We’re working to ensure that students’ challenges, opportunities, and ideas are heard and that their French needs are being met.

MEET OUR FOUNDER

Canadian Youth for French was founded by Justin Morrow, driven by his personal passion for fostering a greater number of French-speaking Canadians nationwide.

Justin grew up English-speaking with no plans to learn the French language. But life threw him headfirst into the subject when he took a post-secondary opportunity with a requirement to learn French. No small feat, Justin progressed from a D-level Grade 9 French dropout to completing a full business degree in French at Université Laval in Québec City.

Throughout this period, not only did Justin gain fluency in French, but he learned first-hand the positive impact that learning a second language can have on your life. Having suffered from life-long clinical depression, Justin found that applying himself to this new endeavour and facing this challenge head-on gave him an unexpected new lease on life.

Through learning French Justin gained invaluable self-confidence. He made meaningful connections with a new community. He realized that learning a second language can be so much more than just a hobby. It can change your life.

Justin’s dedication to promoting the French language led him to establish Canadian Youth for French in 2021. Alongside the Board of Directors, he continues to play an active role in the organization as CEO, passionately advocating for CYF’s expansion throughout the country.
